My first trip to Europe in October, 1962 I landed in Cork, Ireland to do a favor for Stan Laurel. That’s right, Laurel & Hardy. I met him in Los Angeles while I was a student in art school. These photos were taken during the several days I spent in Cork.
In 1973, after seeing a spectacular performance of Balinese dance and music in Berkeley I traveled to Bali to study mask theater. I lived in the village of Peliatan for three and a half months and traveled daily to the village of Batuan where I studied mask theatre with I Nyoman Kakul.
In the late 1980s, as Perestroika was rising, I traveled to Leningrad to take part in the first International Theatre Festival ever held in the Soviet Union, soon to be Russia. It was an electrifying atmosphere of an awakening creativity that had been dormant for generations.
