My work on Paris is largely photo driven. Either I'm
sitting in archives poring over hundreds of old photos of
the city or I'm walking the streets with these photos of Paris in
hand and search to find what stands today. I call my
way of working Forensic Photography wherein I'm
constantly trying to bring old photos to life. Many
bear no resemblance to present-day Paris and one must
look hard to make the connection between old and
new. Looking at storefronts accomplishes little. One must
look up, to patterns of windows, balconies, roof
lines, etc. There's where things begin to connect.
Because of the nature of this work I have developed an
acute visual sense of Paris. I think of myself as a walking eye where the most
mundane can suddeny come alive. My camera is always at my side
and I click in the most unexpected places.
